An Austin resident's story is being featured in a documentary playing in theaters nationwide. The film, directed by Julie Cohen, who previously directed the Oscar nominated best documentary "RGB," follows the lives of three intersex people, including Alicia Roth Weigel, who came out while addressing the Texas Legislature.

"Society generally considers that biological sex is cut and dry, "Weigel says in the film's trailer. "Actually, it's not cut and dry."

Weigel, who identifies as she/they, was one of several subjects in the Austin American-Statesman documentary "Existing as Transgender in Texas," which was released this past May. You can watch it at the top of this story.

She was born with XY chromosomes, a vagina externally and testes rather than a uterus and ovaries. Her parents made the decision at both to have her testes removed shortly after birth.

The organs would have produced testosterone that would have been converted to estrogen if they had not been removed. As a result, Weigel dealt with hormonal withdrawal and calcium draining from her system, affecting her bone density.

"I view it now as I was born special but it took me a long, long time to unlearn everything I was taught to get to that point," Weigel said.

'Every body' documentary on intersex people has glowing reviews

The film has 97% rating on film review website "Rotten Tomatoes," and a 100% audience score. Critics say the documentary "dispels misinformation and creates an informative space for the intersex community to reach."

On RogerEbert.com,Matt Zoller Seitz gave the documentary four stars, characterizing it as "a moving, fascinating look at a too-often-ignored subset of the world's population, filled with empathy and understanding but also a cool, analytical anger about what history has put them through."

Alicia Roth Weigel's biography 'Inverse Cowgirl' set for release, foreword written by 'Queer Eye' star Jonathan Van Ness

Weigel has also written a memoir that is set for release on Sept. 19. The book, "Inverse Cowgirl," is already available for pre-order on Amazon.

The book's foreword is written by another Austin resident: Jonathan Van Ness. Part of "Queer Eye's" cast and better known simply as JVN, Weigel shared her thanks for his efforts alongside others in attempting to block gender affirming care for transgender children in an Instagram post, adding that the book provides a road map to "reclaim ownership over our bodies."
